Create and Achieve your New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of year again, time to set those New Year’s Resolutions for 2009. No matter how your 2008 was – fantastic, terrible or so-so, it’s time to create a game plan to make 2009 great. The question is, where do you start? We’ve put together a little exercise to help you clarify and achieve your New Year’s Resolutions.
What you’ll need to complete this exercise:
- a stack of cue cards or post-it notes
- a pen
- a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted
Step 1 - Dreaming
Think about each area of your life individually and write down, on cue cards or post-it notes, characteristics of your dream life.
If you have completed your Wheel of Life on noomii, you can use the life areas you defined for yourself. A great place to start would be to look at your “10 out of 10’s” – however, you need not be limited by them, write down whatever excites you.
If you have not completed your Wheel of Life on noomii, think about your life in terms of the following areas:
- Health
- Family
- Friends
- Career
- Spirituality
- Money
- Love & Romance
- Fun & Recreation
Remember to dream big, think of your life as you would love to live it. What would your life look like if you loved to wake up every day and were excited to live life? Be bold and write down whatever captivates your imagination.
Step 2 – Timelines
The next step is to look at all of the characteristics of your dream life that you wrote down, and sort them into things you can achieve in:
- 1 year
- 5 years
- 10 years or more
Step 3 – Focus
Question: Do any of the characteristics of your dream life fit in the 1 year category?
If your answer is “YES”
Look at your 1 year dreams, which ones get you the most pumped up and excited about life? Choose your top 2 dreams you can achieve within 1 year and create SMART goals to describe them.
If your answer is “NO”
Look at your 5 year dreams, which one gets you the most excited? Which one would really transform your life? Choose your top 2 dreams you can achieve within 5 years and create SMART goals to describe them. Then chunk your goals down into what you can acheive within the next year to get closer to those goals.
For example, if your 5 year goal is to save $80,000 for a down payment on a house, your 1 year goal can be to save $20,000 towards the down payment on a house.
Step 4 – Take Action
Now that you have your 2 SMART goals, add them to your noomii account as high priority goals. Be sure to add motivating images to your goals to keep you inspired to achieve them.
If you do not yet have a coaching partner, get one. If you have one, be sure to meet with your coaching partner once a week over the next year to discuss your progress towards your New Year’s Resolutions.
And remember:
“None of us can change our yesterdays, but all of us can change our tomorrows.” – Colin Powell
Have a fantastic New Year,
